DLA by Andy Lomas

Andy Lomas produces stunning pictures using DLA (diffusion limited aggregation). The idea behind DLA is to let particles randomly diffuse in a medium until they hit a seed, to which they stick. Fractal structures then grow gradually from the seed, as more and more particles hit them. DLA is typically used to model the growth of crystals. (Unfortunately this type of algorithm cannot be implemented in a "pixel by pixel" way, and cannot be used to produce algorithmic worlds. In particular, once an image is computed at a given resolution, there is no way to recompute it at a higher resolution.)

Andy Lomas uses various shapes as seeds, and submit the particles to force fields to create a rich variety of pictures. Be sure to check also the three impressive videos showing the aggregation process.
